Fatal Collision in Sumas Prairie Involving Impaired Driver

On September 29th, 2022, at 6:25 pm, AbbyPD Patrol Officers responded to a serious collision at the intersection of Wells Line Road and McDermott Road.

Upon arrival, emergency service workers located a two-vehicle collision. One vehicle was occupied by a family of three, with the other vehicle driven by a lone occupant. Tragically, the driver of the family vehicle succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The two remaining occupants were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fifty-year-old driver of the second vehicle remained on scene, was transported to a local area hospital and remains in police custody for an impaired driving investigation. AbbyPD Patrol Officers, and Major Crime Detectives, with the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service (ICARS), remain at the scene and are in the early stages of this investigation.

Road closures are currently in effect from Wells Line Road between Bowman Road and Marion Road, as well as McDermott Road between Campbell Road and Vye Road. AbbyPD will provide an update on our social media once the roads reopen.
