Project clearview

Play a part in keeping Abbotsford safe by registering your outdoor security camera with Project Clearview. When an incident happens nearby, your footage may help AbbyPD piece together important details during an investigation.

Project Clearview is the Abbotsford Police Department’s voluntary registry of privately owned exterior security cameras. By mapping the locations of registered cameras, officers can more efficiently identify where relevant video may exist after a crime, suspicious incident, or public safety concern occurs.

If your home or business has an outdoor security camera, you can choose to register it with Project Clearview. Doing so simply lets AbbyPD know how to contact you if footage from your camera could assist an investigation in your area.

How Project Clearview Works

  • Participation is voluntary and only takes a few minutes to register
  • Your information is stored securely
  • You can opt out of the registry at any time
  • Police will not have live access to your camera—your registration simply lets investigators know who to contact if video footage may be helpful

By participating in Project Clearview, residents and business owners can play an active role in enhancing community safety and supporting timely, effective investigations.

Note: Incidents requiring video evidence can range from property‑related offences such as break‑ins or damage to vehicles, to investigations involving suspicious activity, missing persons, and other serious or time‑sensitive public‑safety concerns.

Project Clearview in action

  • When an incident takes place, AbbyPD officers use the Project Clearview registry to locate any registered exterior cameras positioned near the area of concern.
  • After identifying potential sources of video, AbbyPD will reach out directly to the camera owner(s) to ask whether they are willing to review and share any footage that may be relevant to the investigation.
  • Camera owners choose whether they wish to provide the video, and may do so on a case‑by‑case basis. AbbyPD does not have access to your camera feed or recordings without your explicit consent.
  • Project Clearview is securely managed by Rubicons RubiRegistry, ensuring reliable, protected data storage, privacy safeguards, and professional program administration.

Eligible Cameras

Project Clearview accepts any exterior security camera capable of recording video (and audio) and saving footage for later playback. Cameras that provide only a live view, without the ability to store or review recordings, do not meet the requirements for this program. Both residential properties and businesses are welcome to register their eligible cameras.

About Project Clearview

Project Clearview exists to help the Abbotsford Police Department investigate criminal activity and other important incidents swiftly, proficiently, and adequately.

When something occurs in the community, officers often need to determine whether nearby security cameras captured useful footage. Traditionally, this involves going door‑to‑door or calling local homes and businesses — a necessary step, but one that can take significant time during urgent or complex investigations.

By registering your exterior security camera with Project Clearview, investigators can quickly identify where relevant video may exist, allowing AbbyPD to reach the right locations sooner and stay focused on what matters most: moving the investigation forward and keeping our community safe.

Project Clearview: Community Benefits

  • Allows residents and businesses to directly support neighbourhood safety and work alongside AbbyPD in keeping Abbotsford safe.
  • Helps officers streamline investigations by reducing time spent canvassing for video.
  • Reduces the risk of sensitive footage being posted online, which can compromise investigations or unintentionally mislead the public.

Frequently Asked QUESTIONS

Does joining Project Clearview allow AbbyPD officers to view my camera feed live?

No. Registering your camera does not give AbbyPD any direct or live access to your system or its stored recordings. If footage is needed for an investigation, officers will contact you, and it is entirely your choice whether to share any video.

If my security system includes indoor cameras, does registering with Project Clearview give AbbyPD access to those as well?

When registering, you decide which specific cameras you want to include in Project Clearview. Indoor cameras are not part of the program, and AbbyPD will never have access to them unless you voluntarily provide footage for an investigation.

Can I cancel my registration with Project Clearview, and if so, how?

Joining Project Clearview is entirely voluntary, and you’re free to leave the program whenever you choose. To remove your cameras from the registry, simply click here (insert link once available) and submit your request.

Who is responsible for overseeing the Project Clearview registry?

AbbyPD oversees the Project Clearview registry and securely maintains the list of registered camera locations through Rubicon’s Community Camera Registry platform. This system only stores registration details—AbbyPD cannot view any camera’s live feed or access recorded footage without the owner’s consent.
