Volunteer Opportunity: Abbotsford Police Volunteer Programs
Location: Abbotsford, BC

About:
The Abbotsford Police Department is committed to public safety, crime prevention, and strong community partnerships. We are seeking reliable, community-minded volunteers to support our outreach, education, and crime prevention programs throughout the year.
Position Overview:
Volunteers support the Abbotsford Police Department in one or more of the following programs: Educational Events, Citizens Patrol, Road Safety, Child Car Seat Safety, Bait Car Support, and Safety Talk Presentations. These positions offer valuable training, hands-on experience, and the opportunity to serve the community alongside dedicated police and civilian staff.
Responsibilities (role-dependent):
- Assist at public educational events and community engagement tables;
- Provide crime prevention presence on Citizens Patrol in marked volunteer vehicles (paired shifts);
- Support Road Safety operations such as Speed Watch and Distracted Driving awareness;
- Assist with targeted crime prevention programs;
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment;
- Deliver scripted safety talks to community, youth and seniors groups, as well as selected community partners;
- Observe, document, and report safety concerns or suspicious activity to staff when required.
Requirements:
- Minimum 18 years of age for educational events roles (19+ for Citizens Patrol/Road Safety roles);
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with comfort engaging the public;
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and community members;
- Reliability with scheduling, attendance, and confidentiality expectations;
- Willingness to learn, follow procedures, and represent AbbyPD professionally;
- Daytime, evening and weekend availability as required by program schedules;
- For Citizens Patrol / Road Safety programs: BC Class 5 Drivers License; and,
- Clear police background check.

Community Policing VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
Volunteers must be:
- Clear of a criminal record
- Must be 18 years or older (some programs may require a volunteer to be 19 years or older)
- Must have own transportation to and from their volunteer position
- Ability to read, understand, and communicate effectively in English
- Must pass and maintain a criminal record and drivers abstract
- Must have sufficient time to volunteer

Must be committed to working a minimum of 8 hours a month
Volunteers are expected to adhere to the following:
- One year commitment following training
- Sign agreements on ethics, confidentiality, and a contract
- Attend all sessions of Basic Training and Program Training
- Attend volunteer staff meetings as scheduled
- Must be committed to working a minimum of 8 hours per month
victim services VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
Volunteers are expected to adhere to the following:
- One year commitment following training;
- Sign agreements on ethics, confidentiality, and a contract
- Attend all sessions of Basic Training
- Work a four hour office shift each week and assist with Crisis Response shifts

Optional: attend workshops and/or conferences as they are available
The qualified applicant will:
- Reside within 30 minutes of our APD Headquarters at 2838 Justice Way
- Be primarily interested in aiding those individuals victimized by crime and trauma
- Have integrity and be able to work effectively within a police environment
- Be committed to working one 4 hour shift in the office each week and two 12 hour on call shifts each month. In addition, be committed to attend all required training sessions and staff meetings
- Be mature and demonstrate good judgment
- Be honest, responsible and reliable
- Have a valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s Licence and have obtained and maintained provincial vehicle insurance
- Be able to obtain and maintain an enhanced security clearance by the Abbotsford Police Department
- Be of good moral character and conduct and be willing to sign a code of ethics
- Be able to deal with individuals in a non-judgmental, non-prejudicial manner
- Be people oriented and personable
- Be computer literate
- Be able to write and communicate well. Use appropriate language at all times
- Be able to take directions and yet think independently
- Take an oath of confidentiality and understand that any breach of confidentiality is cause for immediate termination
- Present a professional demeanor and adhere to the ascribed dress code
- Be flexible
- Be able to work harmoniously with others
- Be 19 years of age or older
